A logo appears for Sam Raimi's Oz The Great and Powerful

Filming commenced not too long ago on Sam Raimi’s OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. Yesterday actress Abigail Spencer (MAD MEN) made it official by posting a sign that was on set adorned with what looks to be an early logo for the film.

To date, there’s been a couple of Oz related films. Disney did RETURN TO OZ in 1985 which served as a sequel of sorts to the first film. Seven years earlier an all african american cast did an adaptation called THE WIZ, which starred Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. There was talk that Todd McFarlane would do his own twisted version of OZ, but that project has yet to get off the ground. During those early talks it was announced that Raimi would do his own prequel to the original WIZARD OF OZ.

In the film, James Franco will star as the wizard who puts a woman (Spencer) under his spell then takes off in a hot air balloon which lands in Oz.  When he gets there he finds himself in the middle of a battle between three very different witches played by Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis. Zach Braff is also on board to play the assistant to Franco’s character.
