Act of Valor and Tyler Perry's Good Deeds top Jennifer Aniston's Wanderlust at the weekend box office
When I first learned that Relativity was going to be making a movie featuring and starring real Navy Seals, I thought for sure it would either flop at the box office or bypass it completely and go straight to Blu-ray. But that shows what I know because the film finished in first place this past weekend, hauling in $24 million and easily beating TYLER PERRY’S GOOD DEEDS. I’m not sure what to make of a box office topped by a Navy propaganda film and a Tyler Perry movie, but there you have it. Meanwhile, JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, SAFE HOUSE and THE VOW continue to battle and both are still in the hunt for third, fourth and fifth place. And WANDERLUST couldn’t muster a top five placement, finishing with a very disappointing $6 million.
Next week sees the release of PROJECT X, which I have to admit grows on me with the more previews and clips I see from the film. I’m sure they’ll go overboard with it, but it looks like a fun movie. We also get DR. SEUSS’S THE LORAX, which should fill a big void since there’s zero animated kids movies in theaters right now. My money is on The Lorax, since kids movies always seem to do well. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Act of Valor $24.5m
2. Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds $16m
3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $13.1m
4. Safe House $11m
5. The Vow $9.7m
6. This Means War $10m
7. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance $9.3m
8. Wanderlust $5.8m
9. The Secret World of Arrietty $5m
10. Gone $4.6m
