Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone star in two new clips from The Amazing Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man

I still sense a little trepidation from fans when it comes to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.  The first trailer had everyone thinking it was going to be a flat-out remake of SPIDER-MAN, then the second trailer calmed those fears and got people a little excited.  But as we get closer to the release date, clips and images are popping up that are reinforcing some of the fans’ fears.  Take, for example the first clip below.  The scene features Spidey running from the cops (poorly) and all Spider-Man fans know that he routinely has to run from the cops.  But what’s irritating about this clip is towards the end when Andrew Garfield yells “watch it, I’m swingin’ here” over and over in a strong New York accent.  That makes the whole clip feel kind of campy and doesn’t do much to quell the fears that the film is going to be a giant camp-fest.

The second clip is a little better and features Andrew Garfield trying to warn Gwen Stacy at Oscorp that The Lizard is on the way.  The thing that frustrates me about this clip is the awkward direction and absolutely horrible background music.  Again, this is not the kind of stuff you want to show audiences before the movie comes out.  But hey, maybe I’m too critical and I’ll freely admit that it’s unfair to judge a film based on a few clips.  But with all the big-budget superhero movies this year, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has the most to prove.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dennis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Cambell Scott and Sally Field.  The Marc Webb (500 DAYS OF SUMMER) directed film hits theaters on July 3rd, 2012.  And if recent history is any indication, we’re going to be bombarded with more images, clips, trailers and posters before the release date.
