Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe star in the Les Miserables trailer

Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman star in Les Miserables

Just yesterday we received nine new images from Tom Hooper’s LES MISERABLES and today we get a brief trailer for the film.  The first trailer features a heavy dose of Anne Hathaway singing “I Dreamed a Dream” and if you’re not familiar with the story or the song, then let’s just say this isn’t going to be the feel-good musical you’re looking for during the Christmas season.  It looks like Tom Hooper (who won the Academy Award for THE KING’S SPEECH) is going to make this as epic as he can and you can tell from the trailer that tears will be flowing in the theater.  But it is a classic story, beloved by millions, so as long as stars Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe do the songs justice, I’m sure the audiences will show up.

Between this and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Anne Hathaway should have an extremely successful year at the box office.  It will be interesting to see if Oscar voters be able to fall in love with LES MISERABLES like they did Hooper’s previous effort and like the did with CHICAGO.  Although I think the film will be moderately successful, I can’t shake the feeling that something seems off with LES MISERABLES.  I’ll be looking forward to a longer trailer and since I’m a sucker for musicals, I’ll probably be in line on opening day, just to see whether or not they pulled it off.

LES MISERABLES is about a poor man that steals a loaf of bread to stay alive and the policeman that pursues him.  The event consumes both of their lives.  LES MISERABLES stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks and Helena Bonham-Carter.  The Tom Hooper directed film hits theaters on December 7th.
