Anthony Mackie joins Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling in Gangster Squad

Gangster movies are all too common in Hollywood, but one old-school gangster film I’m looking forward to is the upcoming GANGSTER SQUAD that has just added Anthony Mackie to the already impressive cast of Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Michael Pena.  The film is about the “gangster squad” that was formed in the LAPD in the early 1940’s to keep mobsters out of the city.  Most of the film will revolve around the mobster Mickey Cohen, the charismatic former boxer turned mobster.  Anthony Mackie will play a policeman named Rocky Washington, who was assigned to squad to bring Cohen down.

Will Beall is writing the screenplay which will loosely be based on the LA Times’ series “Tales From the Gangster Squad” which was written by Paul Lieberman.  If there’s one question mark surrounding the film, it’s that it will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, who has previously directed ZOMBIELAND and the upcoming 30 MINUTES OR LESS.  I’m not saying he can’t do it, but going from action comedies to a crime drama is a big genre leap.
