Argo, Lincoln and the 2013 Oscar predictions for the most interesting Best Picture and Director race in years
Bravo to the Academy Awards. This year the list of nominees are a strong batch of contenders. Most of the categories are still completely up in the air giving more than a glimmer of hope to all the nominees. The Best Picture race contains nine very strong movies. I think every category will be exciting and it is anyone’s guess who will be taking home the little gold statue for Best Director and Best Picture. Not since 1989’s DRIVING MISS DAISY has a film won Best Picture without even being nominated for Best Director. However, here we are a few days before the Academy Awards show with Ben Affleck’s thrilling ARGO as a frontrunner without a nomination in the directing category. LINCOLN and LIFE OF PI have racked up the most nominations and seemed statistically primed to take home the award. Couple that with Weinstein’s juggernaut SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK scoring nominations in the top seven categories, it appears on paper to be anyone’s game. I’m exciting to see what happens when I watch most of my favorite films battle it out come February 24.
