Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Commando getting a remake

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Twentieth Century Fox has hired David Ayer to write and direct a remake of the classic 1985 film COMMANDO.  Ayer wrote the script to TRAINING DAY and most recently directed the gritty drama STREET KINGS.  In Ayer’s film, John Matrix (originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) will be “less brawny” and more “covert”.  I think that’s a politically correct way of saying that the remake will feature an “actor” and not a “bodybuilder”.  But if they’re going to change the tone of the film so much, why even call it Commando?

I don’t feel that any movie is too sacred to be remade, but it seems like Fox is stretching with this one.  The original COMMANDO was fun in a cheesy, guilty pleasure kind of way.  The story is one we’ve seen many times before, but Arnold made it fun.  So removing him and focusing on the story seems like a wasted effort.
