Avatar Makes it Five Weekends in a Row at #1

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

To no one’s surprise, AVATAR managed another $41 million in it’s fifth weekend at #1.  So the TITANIC watch continues as AVATAR has now grossed $491 million domestically, which is good enough for third all-time, just passing STAR WARS.  Last week I estimated that it would move to fourth, but we continue to underestimate AVATAR’s ability to draw audiences during the week.  AVATAR truly is an amazing film and now I’m curious to see if it will receive the Oscar attention that TITANIC was able to get.  Also, we have to start guessing which catch-phrase James Cameron will yell if he wins something.

The big new movie of the weekend was Denzel Washington’s THE BOOK OF ELI, which actually gave AVATAR a bit of run with $31 million.  Jackie Chan’s THE SPY NEXT DOOR only managed $9 million, which begs the question; really?  How did a 2009 Jackie Chan movie manage to crack the top ten at the box office?  And in case you missed it, Sandra Bullock and THE BLIND SIDE is still in the top ten.  It’s not pulling in AVATAR numbers, but that’s still pretty impressive.  Next week sees the release of the cool looking LEGION, the sad looking EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES and the horrible looking THE TOOTH FAIRY.
