Avatar makes it six in a row, passes The Dark Knight

I don’t know why, but I continue to be amazed at how successful AVATAR is. I mean, it’s a spectacular movie, but I just can’t believe that it’s going to catch TITANIC. This weekend, it passed THE DARK KNIGHT by almost $20 million. That brings its box office total to $552 million, or just under $48 million away from the sinking boat. I remember when THE DARK KNIGHT was making its run, there was debate all the way up to the final weekend. It seems like the debate with AVATAR was over a couple of weeks ago. I think we should officially start the “Get a haircut, James Cameron” petition now. He really needs to do something before the Oscars in February, he looks ridiculous.
The “big” movie opening this weekend was LEGION, which managed $18 million despite some horrible reviews. But The Rock managed $14 million with his latest cheese fest THE TOOTH FAIRY. Sadly, Harrison Ford couldn’t make his made-for-TV movie EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES do anything more than $7 million. The next challenger to AVATAR is Mel Gibson and his return to awesomeness in EDGE OF DARKNESS. Here’s hoping Mel has a better time with his return than Ford has had with his.
1 Avatar $36,000,000
2 Legion (2010) $18,200,000
3 The Book of Eli $17,000,000
4 The Tooth Fairy $14,500,000
5 The Lovely Bones $8,800,000
6 Sherlock Holmes $7,115,000
7 Extraordinary Measures $7,000,000
8 Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel $6,500,000
9 It’s Complicated $6,190,000
10 The Spy Next Door $4,750,000
