Avatar slips past Sherlock Holmes for top spot at the Box Office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

This is no startling revelation or bold prediction, but AVATAR is going to maintain a successful box-office run for quite some time.  Like TITANIC, it’s going to cruise on word of mouth for weeks to come.  The success continued as it managed to beat SHERLOCK HOLMES by $10 million with a take of $75 million, just a couple million off of its opening weekend numbers.  For those of you keeping track, AVATAR has made over $212 million since it came out on December 18th.   ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 2: THE SQUEAKQUEL and IT’S COMPLICATED were the other two new releases and they managed $50 million and $22 million respectively.  I was also glad to see Clooney’s UP IN THE AIR gain some traction with $11 million

This is pretty much the last decent weekend as far as movies go for a few weeks.  YOUTH IN REVOLT opens on January 8th, which looks pretty good, but I don’t think anything will be challenging AVATAR anytime soon.
