Ben Affleck circling role in The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan

Reports have surfaced that Ben Affleck is circling the role of Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s next film THE GREAT GATSBY. The Academy Award winning actor/director/writer is currently in negotiations but has a scheduling conflict he needs to work out. Looks like his next directorial project ARGO is part of the problem so this could fall through, but Affeck is a smart guy and may be able to manage his time to do both. If he joins the film he will star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio who will play Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. Tom Buchanan is the alcoholic hubby of Daisy who also happens to be a racist and an adulterer- he’s an all-around great guy. Currently THE GREAT GATSBY is scheduled to start shooting this summer.

You may remember a few weeks ago when we reported that Bradley Cooper wanted this particular role in this particular film. I suppose Mr. Luhrmann didn’t get the message but there is still a chance that Affleck can’t do the film which may mean Cooper can sweep in for the save. That would be a nice happy ending, no?
