Ben Affleck is confirmed to play Batman in the Man of Steel sequel

Ben Affleck

Raise your hand if you saw this one coming…that’s what I thought.  Even when I was compiling my list of ten actors over 40 that could be the next Batman, I didn’t consider Ben Affleck because I figured the trauma of playing Daredevil would have been enough to scare him from comic book movies forever.  But clearly, I was wrong as today we get official word that Ben Affleck is in fact the next Batman.  In an official statement, WB rep Greg Silverman said We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some.  His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”  Then Zack Snyder said “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

So as the internet absorbs the shock, my initial reaction is that this is an interesting choice.  Ben certainly has the acting chops to play Batman and can easily go head to head with Henry Cavill, but I’m really surprised he would commit to the role for the long term.  This isn’t a one and done type of role for him and the very nature of the movie dictates there will be numerous sequels, which means Ben Affleck will have to play the character for the next several years.  It will be interesting to see what this means for The Justice League film as well.  I’d also love to see the size of the check WB had to fork over to get Affleck on board.  There will be plenty more to come of course, but right now, how do you feel about Ben Affleck as Batman?
