Ben Affleck's The Town holds off Easy A and Devil at the Box Office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I had a debate with a friend of mine earlier in the week about whether or not Ben Affleck’s second directorial effort, THE TOWN, would achieve commercial and/or critical success.  We thought that it would come in third or fourth this weekend, but I don’t think anyone predicted it would come in first.  It’s nice to see Affleck achieve some success by making some really great, quality movies.  On the opposite side of the spectrum, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit by the continued struggles for M. Night Shyamalan.  I think that if his name wasn’t attached to DEVIL, it might have done better.  Audiences just don’t take Shyamalan seriously anymore.  And the frustrating thing about EASY A is that it was marketed as a stupid teen comedy, but it was actually much more than that.  I think audiences are missing out on this quality film.

Next week sees the long delayed release of WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS and the wild card LEGENDS OF THE GUARDIAN, which doesn’t look like much to me, but if the kids like it, Guardians might find itself at number one.  Note: the box office numbers below will be updated as they become finalized.

Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner in The Town

1. The Town $23.6 million

2. Easy A $18.3 million

3. Devil $12.7 million

4. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D $10 million

5. Alpha and Omega $9 million

6. Takers $3 million

7. The American $2.8 million

8. The Other Guys $2 million

9. Inception $1.9 million

10. Eat Pray Love $1.7 million
