Ben Stiller will direct and star in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

The remake of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY has been in development for some time now. 20th Century Fox has been trying to lock down a star and director for just as long. Several names had been mentioned for the lead including Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Ben Stiller was finally locked down in early April after reading the script by Steve Conrad (THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS) and absolutely loving it. Then it turned in to a hunt for a director. At certain points Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard  were interested in directing. When Baron Cohen was on board, Gore Verbinski wanted to direct. All of these options feel through and the directing prospects went on to other projects.

Now it’s being reported that Stiller has decided to take on not only a starring role but the role of director. The story, which was a film from 1947 and adapted from a short story by James Thurber follows, “a day-dreaming book editor who can’t seem to do anything right, so he imagines all sorts exciting lives for himself.”
