Billy Crystal replaces Eddie Murphy as host of the Oscars

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

After the failed and misguided attempt to go “younger” and “hipper” with Brett Ratner producing and Eddie Murphy hosting the 84th Annual Academy Awards, the Academy decided this time around to go safer and older.  We already knew that respected producer Brian Grazer replaced Ratner, but as speculation ran rampant as to who was going to replace Eddie Murphy, it turns out a deal with 8 time Oscar host Billy Crystal was already in the works.  Well, you can’t get much safer than the 63 year-old Billy Crystal.  No one will have to worry about him making a homophobic joke, hitting on women, or being funny in any capacity.

I’m disappointed in this choice, only because I would like to see the Oscars do it right for a change.  I’m still a big supporter of Steve Martin returning to host, or perhaps going with a young comedian or stage actor.  I just don’t know if I can stomach another opening musical number from Billy Crystal.  The Oscars will air on February 26th.
