Brad Pitt's The Tree of Life wins the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival

It’s probably not a big surprise, but the Terrence Malick directed film THE TREE OF LIFE starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain, has won the Best Picture award (The Palme d’Or) at the Cannes Film Festival. The film has gotten mixed reviews from reviewers around the web, so it’ll be interesting to see if THE TREE OF LIFE will be able to woo general audiences worldwide and become an Academy Award contender next year.  It doesn’t always happen as the 2010 winner was UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES and this wasn’t even nominated in the foreign film category at the Oscars. So we’ll have to wait and see whether or not this dramatic film will resonate with American audiences.  The other noteworthy wins were Best Director for Nicolas Winding’s work on DRIVE and Best Actress for Kirsten Dunst in MELANCHOLIA

On a happy note at least we’ll get to see Brad Pitt in a film this year, it feels like it’s been awhile since we’ve seen his famous face (although it’s really only been less than two years).
