Bridesmaids impresses, but Thor remains number one at the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I don’t want to make too big of a deal about BRIDESMAIDS making nearly $25 million at the box office, but I hope everyone shares in my enjoyment that this all female, raunchy comedy has found success at the box office.  True, it wasn’t able to claim the top spot, but coming within $10 million of THOR is actually pretty impressive.  The other new movie of the weekend was PRIEST, which most of us wrote off as another cheesy action/horror film, but it too managed to overperform, pulling in nearly $15 million, which was good enough for fourth place.  Overall, a decent weekend for Hollywood and I’d expect more female-driven comedies in the future.

This weekend was a little bit of an anomaly considering there weren’t any big studio tentpoles, but all of that changes in the coming weeks as we see PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, THE HANGOVER 2 and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS in the weekends that follow.  I can’t imagine THOR holding on for three weekends in a row, but I do expect BRIDESMAIDS to keep going strong and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it pull in over $100 million when it’s all said and done.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph in Bridesmaids

1. Thor $34

2. Bridesmaids $24.5

3. Fast Five $20.2

4. Priest $15.5

5. Rio $8m

6. Something Borrowed $7.5m

7. Jump the Broom $6.5m

8. Water For Elephants $4m

9. Madea’s Big Happy Family $1.8m

10. Soul Surfer $1.5m
