Cameron Diaz to play Miss Hannigan in Annie remake
Early reports were that Sandra Bullock would be stepping into the role of the Miss Hannigan, the cruel lady who ran the orphanage in ANNIE. Apparently, Miss Bullock passed and Miss Cameron Diaz accepted. Bullock is a big wig now producing films, winning Oscars and starring in summer blockbusters (I’m referring to this week’s THE HEAT). I’m not completely sure about this ANNIE remake, but I do think Cameron Diaz isn’t quite as charismatic or funny as Sandra Bullock. I don’t like knocking people down with negativity, so she might be a delightful surprise in a fun musical remake. (Deadline)
ANNIE has already had two musical film adaptations, in 1982 starring Albert Finney and Carol Burnett and a made for TV movie in 1999. Based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie (Quvenzhané Wallis), the story follows a young orphan trying to find her real parents as she is stuck in an orphanage ran by the cruel Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). However, when Annie gets to live with the billionaire Daddy Warbucks (this time named Benjamin Stacks played by Jamie Foxx) for a short time, she is able to win the hearts of everyone. Of course this all happens with a bunch of singing and dancing as well. James Lassiter, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jay Z will produce the film. Will Gluck (EASY A) will direct the film set to come out Christmas Day 2014.
