Cars 2 and Bad Teacher top the weekend box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

In true box office fashion, in a weekend that arguably has the two critically worst movies of the summer, we see the overall box office performance actually up from this time last year.  CARS 2 is the big winner of the weekend, taking in considerably more than the $50 million or so the studio expected.  CARS 2 is clearly an important film for Pixar because it showed a) they don’t really have to try to make money and b) even their worst film is going to make tons of cash.  Some Pixar fans are calling it the beginning of the end for the studio that had such an impressive string of excellent films, but I’m just going to chalk it up to a money-making grab for Pixar and Disney.  As for BAD TEACHER, there are no excuses for such a pathetic film.  America should be ashamed that it made over $30 million this weekend.

Next week belongs to TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, which is actually opening in Imax 3D on Tuesday.  So no matter what, it will win the box office.  I know the haters want to bash Michael Bay and trash his films, but personally, I’m looking forward to it.  It’s been a rough year for movies that are trying to be something they’re not and it will be nice to watch a movie that just wants to blow stuff up.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Cars 2 $68m

2. Bad Teacher $31m

3. Green Lantern $18m
