Channing Tatum joins Steve Carell in Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher

News of Steve Carell starring in FOXCATCHER for director Bennet Miller was met with cautious excitement by Carell’s biggest fans. Although I don’t think anyone has any doubts the gifted comedian can pull off a drama, the fact remains that Carell really hasn’t had a role of this caliber yet in his career. One of the things that Carell really needs in order to pull this off is a solid supporting cast and depending on your opinion of Channing Tatum, he may or may not have gotten that today. To refresh your memory, Carell is set to play murderer, billionaire and all around psycho John du Pont. In 1996, he murdered free style wrestler (and friend) David Schultz and in the ensuing trial, it was revealed that du Pont was mentally unstable and thought everyone was out to get him. Channing Tatum will be playing Schultz.
It’s the kind of casting that can make or break the film. My first question is how big of a role does Schultz play in the film and will Tatum have to do anything but act tough and mumble. But hey, this is a chance for Tatum and Carell to prove they can do more than the roles they’ve done so far. Bennet Miller is a good choice to direct and the casting at least has me intrigued. Shooting should start in the spring with a release in time for next year’s awards season.
