Channing Tatum to star in Magic Mike for director Steven Soderbergh

When it was first revealed, several years ago, that Channing Tatum worked as a male stripper when he was 19, it almost seemed like he was embarrassed by the news. Well, it doesn’t seem like that any longer as he’s been trying to sell his passion project MAGIC MIKE for a few years now. The film is about an older male stripper that mentors a younger male stripper about how to hustle his way into more money. He’s had a few directors attached to it at various points, but it looks like Steven Soderbergh is now going to take on the project. Tatum and Soderbergh just finished shooting HAYWIRE and they seem to have hit it off.
Movies about strippers (male or female) are not typically enjoyable, but I’ve always enjoyed Soderbergh’s smaller films. If he’s excited about it and anxious to make it, then there must be something about MAGIC MIKE that’s different. When talking about the film, Soderbergh said “I said I wanted in immediately. It’s sexy, funny and shocking. We’re using Saturday Night Fever as our model, so hopefully we’re on the right track.” I’m not sure Fever is the right movie to model after, but I’m sure Soderberg knows what he’s doing.
