Charlize Theron to star in the new Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody film Young Adult

Their first collaboration (JUNO) was so successful that it’s no wonder director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody would choose to work together on a new film. This time, Reitman will be taking the reigns of YOUNG ADULT, the new script from Cody about a young adult novel ghost writer that wants to reclaim her identity. Her plan is to try to get back together with her high school boyfriend, who now wants nothing to do with her. While working on her plan, she meets her old high school pals and that leads to an exploration of hopes and dreams and the reality that sets in after high school. Charlize Theron will be playing the ghost writer and she’s the only official star attached at this point.
I like the second part of the script, where a writer talks to old high school classmates and learns where their dreams died and what happened to their lives, but the idea of her trying to get back together with her ex, who’s now married by the way, is a little off-putting. We’ve seen silly rom-coms like that before. But despite her personality faults, Cody is a talented writer, so I’ll have faith she knows what she’s doing.
