Chloe Moretz to star in Stephen King’s Carrie remake with March 2013 Release Date
Less than a year away and we will receive another remake of a classic horror film. But unlike most unnecessary remakes, I actually believe Brian De Palma’s 1976 CARRIE is an interesting choice to revive. There was also an OK sequel in 1999 and a made for television version in 2002, but I’m not counting those. With Chloe Moretz slated to take on the title character, I’m kind of excited to see the results.
For the record, I’m a fan of the original CARRIE and thought De Palma’s vision was appropriately creepy and interesting in style. But the real winner was Sissy Spacek’s performance of the young bullied girl with telekinetic powers that takes revenge on her classmates at her high school prom. The image of Spacek wide-eyed covered in blood is one that has seared itself into my memory for life, so Chloe Moretz has a big blood drenched prom queen tiara to fill. With films like KICK-ASS, LET ME IN (another horror remake), HUGO and a slew of upcoming films including next months DARK SHADOWS, Chloe Moretz has been nearly flawless in her roles and I’m confident she’s up for the challenge.
When I was younger, I read a lot of Stephen King books. However, CARRIE was always one that escaped me and I’m pretty sure Brian De Palma left a lot of wiggle room for left out story points. Directed by Kimberly Peirce (BOYS DON’T CRY, STOP LOSS) and starring Chloe Moretz, the next question is who will be cast as the insanely sadistic over religious mother? The new CARRIE is set to release in theaters March 15, 2013. (Screen Gems)
