Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks and Olivia Wilde star in the People Like Us trailer

Chris Pine and Olivia Wilde in People Like Us

Chris Pine might be better known these days for his work in action movies and of course as playing a young James T. Kirk in the STAR TREK reboot, but he does have some rom-coms and dramas under his belt.  Lets not forget Chris Pine’s great performance in the Lindsay Lohan film JUST MY LUCK.  But after a string of action films that included UNSTOPPABLE and THIS MEANS WAR, Chris Pine is back on the drama route with PEOPLE LIKE US.  The film is written by STAR TREK writer Alex Kurtzman, who is also making his directing debut on the film.  I would have thought going from writing STAR TREK to writing a drama like PEOPLE LIKE US would be difficult, but the trailer seems decent enough.

The film is about a young, hotshot salesman (Chris Pine) that’s in over his head in debt.  But after his father dies and leaves him $150,000, he’s faced with a moral dilemma when he’s asked to give the money to the sister he’s never met or even knew existed.  He sets out to find her and he quickly befriends her and starts to care for her and her young boy.  The trailer has an odd tone for a movie that has serious undertones and it almost seems like they’re trying to make it sound more adventurous than it really is.  But it features a lot of Chris Pine, so his fans should be happy.  If I have a concern, it’s with the too-close-to-incest vibe I got from the trailer.  If Chris Pine’s character doesn’t tell his sister he’s her brother early on, that’s going to be hanging out there and it’s going to make everything awkward.

Along with Chris Pine, the film stars Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jon Favreau and Mark Duplass.  PEOPLE LIKE US hits theaters on June 29th, 2012.
