Christian Bale is deep in thought on the first poster for The Flowers of War

One film that is hoping for some Oscar glory is China’s official submission into the Best Foreign Film race, THE FLOWERS OF WAR (formerly titled 13 FLOWERS). The film is about the Nanjing massacre where thousands of innocent Chinese citizens were brutally murdered in 1937 by an invading Japanese army. One thing the film has going for it that other films in the category do not is that Flowers stars Christian Bale. Bale plays a priest named John that provides shelter for prostitutes and children during the attacks. The film is an ambitious one for director Zhang Yimou and will feature about 40% English and 60% Mandarin. With a budget of over $90 million, it’s also one of the most expensive films ever made in China.
The first poster for the film is below and it features an awkward-looking Christian Bale checking out a Chinese woman. I’m sure they could have done more with the poster, but this is all we have. The film doesn’t have a US theatrical date yet, but look for it in early 2012.
