Christian Bale wants to climb Everest for director Baltasar Kormakur

It looks like Batman and Bane are going to face off again, this time over the famed Mt. Everest.  Christian Bale is looking to star in the film EVEREST, which would follow a climbing expedition in 1996 where 8 climbers lost their lives after a storm hit mid-climb.  It will be based on several accounts, but will use Jon Krakauer’s ‘Into Thin Air’ as the baseline.  CONTRABAND director Baltasar Kormakur will be directing the film.  Right now, it’s unclear what role Christian Bale would play.

Of course, Tom Hardy has his own Everest story set up with director Doug Liman. Hardy’s story is based off the Jeffrey Archer book ‘Paths of Glory’ and is about real life mountain climber George Mallory, who is credited as being the first man to climb Mount Everest despite some controversy.  As with all projects that deal with similar subject matter, the real question is which film can get made and released first.  That doesn’t always mean more success (see MIRROR MIRROR for example), but it could lead to the other project being cancelled.  Right now, it looks like Christian Bale’s EVEREST could lens before Hardy’s since the latter is busy until well into 2014.
