Chronicle and The Woman In Black battle it out for first place at the weekend box office

Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman in Black

I don’t think anyone would have predicted that Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Harry Potter film, THE WOMAN IN BLACK, would pull in over $20 million at the box office on its first weekend.  I think it would be funny that if from now on, whenever someone ask Daniel Radcliffe what he’s done, he only responds with “I starred in THE WOMAN IN BLACK”.  Maybe he’s a legitimate box office star after all.  But as good as his film performed, it looks like it will come in second place, just a hair behind CHRONICLE.  It turns out that you don’t need a recognizable superhero to have a successful “superhero” film.

Next week sees the release of JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, SAFE HOUSE and THE VOW.  Oh, and it also sees the return of STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 – THE PHANTOM MENACE.  Why anyone would subject themselves to that again is beyond me.  My money is on the Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington action film SAFE HOUSE to take the weekend.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Chronicle $22m

2. The Woman in Black $21m

3. The Grey $9.5m

4. Big Miracle $8.1m

5. Underworld: Awakening $5.5m

6. One For The Money $5.11m

7. Red Tails $5m

8. The Descendants $4.6

9. Man on a Ledge $4.5m

10. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close $3.9m
