Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Tom Hooper react to The King's Speech nominations

To me, one of the best things about hearing the nominations for the Academy Awards is hearing the reactions from the actors and directors. Sure, some of them have been here so many times it’s not a huge deal but others seem so absolutely overjoyed it just makes you smile. As one of the big nominees of this year’s award season, THE KING’S SPEECH director Tom Hooper had a lot to be proud of. Here was his reaction to this mornings announcement,
I am absolutely overwhelmed by the twelve Oscar nominations for ‘The King’s Speech’. I am so grateful to the Academy. I am incredibly proud of my extraordinary cast and crew. This is a day I will remember for the rest of my life.
Isn’t that nice? It just seems so genuine and not something that happens to him ever, as opposed to Colin Firth who said,
Currently celebrating with my colleagues three feet above the ground. Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour.
Not that I’m saying anything negative about Mr. Firth, but he has been here before so even though it’s a big deal it’s almost old news since he’s been nominated in the past. However, he’s probably not nearly as complacent as Geoffrey Rush who has already won an Oscar. Mr. Rush’s only statement was,
As an Australian, I’m as excited to be recognized and honored by the Academy as my character must have been when his London speech therapy business flourished when the future King Of England happened to pop by one day. This story has struck such a rich resonant chord with audiences of all ages, which is very exciting — to have your work honored by your industry peers is even better.
It would appear that the more times you’ve been recognized, the slightly less excited you get about the honor. I mean look at Meryl Streep and all her nominations. I wonder if she even bothers to get up to watch the nomination announcements the year’s she’s had a big film.
