Conan, Fright Night, Spy Kids 4D and One Day all struggle at the Weekend Box Office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

What a strange weekend at the box office.  First, it looks like last week’s #2 film, THE HELP, is going to be snagging the top spot this weekend, while RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES falls to #2.  From there, we get a string of new releases, all of which struggled in their own right.  First up is SPY KIDS 4D, which looked like it might have actually been worse than the other three.  If the numbers hold, it will finish in the third spot, which is better than any of the other new releases.  That’s followed by CONAN THE BARBARIAN and FRIGHT NIGHT, which were both trashed by critics and then severely over-marketed.  But it doesn’t look like the marketing helped as neither cracked the $15 million mark.  But the saddest turnout of the weekend is ONE DAY, which barely cracked the top ten.  I think this little rom-com gem is a victim of bad timing.

Next week doesn’t look like it has a clear #1 movie either.  We have a comedy-drama hybrid with the Paul Rudd film OUR IDIOT BROTHER, the Zoe Saldana action movie COLUMBIANA and the oft-delayed horror film DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK.  It’s tough to say who will win next week, but my money’s on THE HELP or APES.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

UPDATE: The placements stayed the same, but the numbers changed slightly.

Jason Momoa as Conan

1. The Help $20.4m

2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes $16.3m

3. Spy Kids 4D $12m

4. Conan the Barbarian $10m

5. The Smurfs $8m

6. Fright Night $7.9m

7. Final Destination 5 $7.7m

10. Crazy, Stupid, Love $4.9m
