Contraband beats Beauty and the Beast 3D at the weekend box office
Well, if there was ever any question which Disney film would stand the test of time, I guess now it’s answered. When Disney released THE LION KING 3D back in September, it managed to gross $30 million its opening weekend on its way to pulling in over $94 million during its domestic re-release. So of course Disney gave BEAUTY AND THE BEAST the 3D treatment, but this time the results were slightly less as Beauty only managed less than $20 million during its three day opening. Maybe if THE LION KING 3D went up against Marky Mark, it wouldn’t have fared as well since the Mark Wahlberg action film took the top spot at the weekend box office, proving that audiences don’t mind what Wahlberg does, as long as beats up bad guys in the process.
Next week sees the release of HAYWIRE, UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING and RED TAILS, all of which will probably do alright at the box office. I’m most looking forward to HAYWIRE, only to see what Steven Soderbergh does with the action genre. Note: the numbers below are for the three day weekend and will be updates as they become final.
1. Contraband $18m
2. Beauty and the Beast 3D $18.5m
