Date Night fights off Clash of the Titans for #1 at the box office

In what might have been the closest race of the year so far, and might change once the final figures are in from today, DATE NIGHT managed to beat out CLASH OF THE TITANS at the box office. The Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy brought in $27.1 million while Sam Worthington and Titans managed $26.9 million. For those that don’t keep up with the box office numbers on a regular basis, the Sunday totals are always estimated and the actual numbers might vary once the final tally comes in. But for right now, it’s nice to see DATE NIGHT beating out the horrible CLASH OF THE TITANS. It appears the bad 3D was able to fool audiences the first weekend, but couldn’t do it two weeks in a row. I’m not surprised at all to see LETTERS TO GOD crack the top ten. As I’ve said before; there’s a huge market out there that studios just aren’t tapping into.
Next week sees the release of DEATH AT A FUNERAL and KICK-ASS. Although KICK-ASS has the fanboys on its side, I’m not sure it will appeal to mass audiences. I’m thinking the race next week is going to be close and with some positive word of mouth, DATE NIGHT might be able to make it two in a row.
1. Date Night $27.1 million
2. Clash of the Titans $26.9 million
3. How to Train Your Dragon $25.4 million
4.Why Did I Get Married Too $11 million
5. The Last Song $10 million
6. Alice in Wonderland $5.6 million
7. Hot Tub Time Machine $5.4 million
8. The Bounty Hunter $4.3 million
9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid $4.1 million
10. Letters to God $1.1 million
