David Fincher to helm 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Disney has been angling to get a big screen adaptation of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA off the ground for quite some time.  Things got close when McG was going to do a film based on one of the characters, but as the budget spiraled out of control, so did the interest from Disney executives.  But now it looks like the film will happen as David Fincher looks set to take the reigns of the high-profile studio project.  Fincher, of course, has really only had one big-budget, mass-appeal film and that was the disappointing ALIEN 3.  Needless to say, Fincher has quite an impressive resume since then and it will be interesting to see what he does with a big budget and a great story.

Scott Z. Burns is going to write the script from the classic Jules Verne novel.  I can only assume that an announcement the film will be shot in 3D will be coming shortly.  And does anyone else feel this is a project right up Brad Pitt’s alley?
