David O. Russell on board for a sequel to The Fighter

With the overwhelming success of last year’s boxing film THE FIGHTER, which garnered two Academy Awards (best supporting actor and actress for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo) and five other nominations including best picture and best director, I suppose it’s not terribly surprising that a sequel was on it’s way. The story followed brothers Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund during the rise of Micky’s boxing career, the sequel would continue on with Micky’s story and follow him and his three fights with Arturo Gatti that are well known in the sport. What’s surprising is that director David O. Russell is on board with the sequel and wants to take part in writing the screenplay (which if you’ve read anything about him is not surprising). He says, “whenever anyone says they’re ready, I’m ready to write it.” Mark Wahlberg (who played Micky) has already expressed interest in the sequel and would really like to make this into a trilogy (he was the driving force behind getting THE FIGHTER to the screen) but it’s still very unclear as to whether Christian Bale, Melissa Leo or Amy Adams would return for any subsequent films.
It’ll be interesting to see if this really gets off the ground as David O. Russell has quite a few projects lined up, but he really loved this story and the dynamic of the family so we’ll just have to wait and see if THE FIGHTER 2 really happens.
