A Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds is actually going to happen

Maybe the only bright spot in 2009’s X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE was seeing Deadpool on the big screen.  Sure, it wasn’t what fans wanted, but it was still nice to see the character brought to life and for the most part, Ryan Reynolds did fine with what he had to work with, which wasn’t much.  But since then, fans have been clamoring for Deadpool to get his own film and for it to be done right.  And of course, when fanboys say “done right”, what they really mean is “rated R”.  Well, I don’t know if Fox has the guts to make an R-rated superhero film, but word comes today that Fox has greenlit a Deadpool movie, due to hit theaters on February 12th, 2016.  Tim Miller will be directing the film with Ryan Reynolds returning as Deadpool.

So, a couple of thoughts on this.  First, the release date seems unusual for a superhero movie.  That tells me Fox isn’t expecting this to break records, hence no Summer or Christmas release date.  It also tells me the budget is likely to be much less than most superhero movies, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  Second, I really want to know if they’re going to acknowledge Origins at all, or just start from scratch.  Third, I wonder how closely they’ll stick to Tim Miller’s original vision.  The test footage that leaked a while back was very raw, but what fascinated me about Miller’s idea was the plan to make it a meta movie in which Deadpool knows he’s in a movie.  I guess time will tell if Fox and audiences are ready for something like that.  Either way, this is great news for one of Marvel’s most original characters, at least in terms of personality.  It should be fun seeing him on the big screen, hopefully this time with better results.
