Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules edges Sucker Punch at the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I wasn’t sure DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES was going to be able to capture the success of the first one, only because the first one didn’t live up to expectations.  But as it turns out, it’s actually going to end up with about $24 million, beating the original’s opening weekend gross by about $2 million.  The other highly publicized, yet highly criticized film this weekend was Zack Snyder’s SUCKER PUNCH, which ended up coming in second place with about $20 million.  I think this is a credit to the marketing folks over at Warner Brothers because the film appeals to the same crowd that would read early reviews and internet buzz, neither of which was very favorable to SUCKER PUNCH.

Next week sees Jake Gyllenhaal try to open his own movie again with the science fiction film SOURCE CODE and Russell Brand goes CGI in the Easter comedy HOP.  Those two will battle it out for first place, with my money going on HOP because kids movies always do well.  But we shouldn’t rule out the horror film INSIDIOUS, which might be able to rake in some box office dough by filling the void of horror films lately.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
