Doug Liman to direct Attica

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Doug Liman will tackle the 1971 Attica State prison riot in which guards and prisoners clashed, resulting in the death of 42 people.  History seems to paint the riot as more of a rebellion and it’s hard to get a true account of what happened.  But the real question is going to be how Liman and screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher tell the story.  Do they start in the beginning and try to justify the riot, or do they pick up when the riot starts and focus on the government and police force that stormed the prison?  I think Liman has his work cut out for him with this one.

Doug Liman is one of those directors that never seems to get credit for his work, but he turns out some pretty good films.  THE BOURNE IDENTITY and MR. AND MRS. SMITH are good, fun films and I thought he added a nice touch to them.  I’ll be interested to see what he does with a politically charged movie like ATTICA.
