Eddie Murphy out as host of the Academy Awards

In a strange show of support for the misogynistic, homophobic Brett Ratner, Eddie Murphy has officially dropped out as host of the 84th Annual Academy Awards. In an official statement, Murphy said:
First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.
Although I was actually in favor of Murphy hosting the Oscars, my general feel for the guy is that he’s more trouble than he’s worth. And the fact he would step down because of Ratner’s departure has dropped my already low opinion of him. But the good news is that this gives the Academy another chance to get it right and I’d like to see them do what Harvey Weinstein suggested, which is to have Lorne Michaels produce and Tina Fey run/write the telecast. And while we’re dreaming, let’s have Steve Martin come back as host.
