Fast Five breaks records on its way to topping the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

No one should be surprised that FAST FIVE topped the box office this past weekend.  There was practically zero competition.  But what you probably will be surprised at is just how much dough the film managed to rake in.  Early numbers have the fifth film in the series on pace to total over $80 million in three days.  That’s insane for a fifth installment in a franchise.  I’ll admit that the film was fun, but I didn’t expect it to do this well.  I was thinking 40 or 50 million.  It should be noted that FAST FIVE is now the highest grossing film in Universal Studios history (yes, bigger than JURASSIC PARK and its sequels)  The other new movie of the weekend was Disney’s PROM, which came in fifth.  Analysts are saying that makes it a flop, but for a movie about high school that has no name stars in it and it doesn’t involve singing, I don’t think anyone should scoff at $4 million.

Of course, next week sees the long awaited debut of THOR.  Normally, I would assume THOR would be number one by a long shot, but given the lack of excitement around THOR and the recent, huge success of FAST FIVE, I think it will be closer than people think.  We also have the release of SOMETHING BORROWED, which looks like it needs more John Kasinski and less Ginnifer Goodwin.
