Few surprises on Oscar night as The Artist wins Best Picture and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin
The 84th Annual Academy Awards are officially over and to no one’s surprise, THE ARTIST won Best Picture and Jean Dujardin won Best Actor for the film as well. All in all, the film took home five awards, which was equal to Martin Scorsese’s HUGO. I wouldn’t call it a surprise, but Meryl Streep won Best Actress (and probably gave the best acceptance speech) for her work in THE IRON LADY, upsetting the favorite Viola Davis. Overall, it was a good show, much better than last year’s telecast. Say what you want about Billy Crystal, but the guy can host the Oscars anytime.
As the producers of the Academy Awards continue to tinker with the telecast and figure out what the can do to draw more people in, my personal opinion is that they can make the telecast more interesting if they could figure out how to put more mystery into the show. But almost everyone in America knew THE ARTIST was going to win Best Picture and while cycling through the list of winners, there aren’t really any surprises.
