Fox has chosen James Mangold to direct Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine

Ever since Darren Aronofsky dropped out of directing THE WOLVERINE, Fox has been on the hunt for a new helmer to get the ball rolling. Last month, eight possible choices were put on a shortlist: Jose Padilha, Doug Liman, Antoine Fuqua, Mark Romanek, Justin Lin, Gavin O’Connor, James Mangold and Gary Shore.
A decision was finally made and Mangold is the one who will be directing Wolverine’s journey in Japan. Negotiations will be underway soon according to Deadline. Fox is looking to start principal photography this fall.
Mangold, who has directed a few Oscar winning performances, is an interesting choice for the job. The director leans more towards the dramatic flair when it comes to projects. Mangold has been taking on films with more action such as KNIGHT & DAY and 3:10 to YUMA. The story of THE WOLVERINE is derived from the graphic novel which comes from Frank Miller and Chris Claremont is fairly heavy on Wolverine’s emotional attachments to Japan, but still keeps with the action as well. This might be a good balance for Mangold to play with.
