George Clooney, Kirsten Dunst and The Descendants get top honors from the Kansas City Film Critics

George Clooney in The Descendants

The Kansas City Film Critics Circle gave out their 2011 film awards Sunday night.  As a member I had the privilege of voting and being a part of the process.  Overall, I’m happy with our decisions, specifically the love towards THE TREE OF LIFE with Supporting Actress going to Jessica Chastain and Best Director going to Terrence Malick.  However, my one major disappointment went to Kirsten Dunst who won Best Actress for the overrated MELANCHOLIA.  I think for me the biggest surprise is what the awards don’t show.  For instance, the slick indie flick DRIVE that went home empty handed, came in a close second to many categories including Best Picture.   That prize ultimately went to THE DESCENDANTS, which also garnered a Best Actor for George Clooney.  See below for the full list of winners.

Robert Altman Award for Best Director: Terrence Malick – THE TREE OF LIFE
Best Actor:  George Clooney – THE DESCENDANTS
Best Actress:  Kirsten Dunst – MELANCHOLIA
Best Supporting Actor:  Christopher Plummer – BEGINNERS
Best Supporting Actress:  Jessica Chastain – THE TREE OF LIFE
Best Original Screenplay:  Mike Mills – BEGINNERS

Best Adapted Screenplay:  Steven Zaillian & Aaron Sorkin – MONEYBALL
Best Animated:  RANGO
Best Foreign Film:  A SEPERATION (Iran)
Vince Koehler Award for Best Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror Film: HUGO
