George Clooney, Rooney Mara, Hugo and The Artist rack up Oscar nominations

The 84th Annual Academy Awards nominations have been announced and the nominations fell where most of us thought they would.  The Best Picture race seems to be down to two, with HUGO gaining steam as it took in 11 nominations, the most overall.  But THE ARTIST managed 10 nominations on its own, keeping its hopes for Oscar glory alive.  Veterans George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Viola Davis and Meryl Streep all got Best Acting nominations.

Personally, I was very happy to see Rooney Mara pick up a nomination for her work in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, especially since the film was shut out from all the other major categories.  But most of all, I’m ecstatic that THE TREE OF LIFE not only got a Best Picture nomination, but also garnered a Best Director nomination for Terrence Malick.  True, I’m disappointed DRIVE didn’t get any major nominations, but you can’t win them all.
