George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, The Artist and The Help lead the Golden Globe nominations

When I saw the announcement of the Golden Globe nominations, I was excited, not because of who would win, but because this would pull into focus who might win at the Academy Awards. If this is any indication, then it looks like the silent black and white film THE ARTIST (which is great, by the way) will have a leg up on the competition, as well as the surprise summer film THE HELP. For the acting nominations, the good money is on George Clooney and Michael Fassbender for THE DESCENDANTS and SHAME respectively, along with Tilda Swinton and Viola Davis for WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN and THE HELP. Overall, I don’t see any major surprises in the list.
Ryan Gosling was a big winner, getting two well deserved Best Actor nominations for CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE and THE IDES OF MARCH. I’m also excited to see some love for Rooney Mara in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO since she seems to be getting shut out in most awards.
As far as snubs, the biggest snub of the bunch belongs to EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE, which didn’t get any nominations. That might be partially due to the fact that screeners didn’t get sent out until a few days ago. Hopefully, it will do better at the Academy Awards.
