George Clooney's The American beats out Machete at the box office

This is one of those weekends where I’m surprised any movie won the weekend. Neither THE AMERICAN nor MACHETE had a broad range of audience appeal and I was kind of expecting both films to fail at the box office. But I guess I’m a little surprised that George Clooney and THE AMERICAN were able to nab the top spot. Of course, it did so without even pulling in $20 million, so I it really shouldn’t be too proud. The other new film to open this weekend was Drew Barrymore’s GOING THE DISTANCE, which looked cute, but again, not something that large audiences would flock to.
We’re in for a slow box office season until Thanksgiving. Next week sees the release of RESIDENT EVIL 427. Seriously, how many films are they going to make in that series? It also sees the release of the much hyped THE VIRGINITY HIT, which looks like it could be good for a few laughs.
1. The American $12.9 million
2. Takers $11.4
3. Machete $11.3 million
4. The Last Exorcism $7.6 million
5. Going The Distance $6.8 million
6. The Expendables $6.6 million
7. The Other Guys $5.4 million
8. Eat Pray Love $4.8 million
9. Inception $4.5 million
10. Nanny McPhee Returns $3.5 million
