Gerard Butler to star in Shakespeare's Coriolanus

Gerard Butler has been searching for a hit movie since 300.  We thought he may have found it in LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, but overall profits from the film were disappointing.  So he’s going back to his roots by starring in the war-themed film CORIOLANUS, whichThe Hollywood Reporter describes as “a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s Rome-set political and family drama.”  The film will be directed by Ralph Fiennes, marking his first directing effort.

Coriolanus is a somewhat complicated play from Shakespeare and definitely one of his lesser known.  After reading through the synopsis, it’s easy to see why this wouldn’t work well on a stage.  It seems to be an epic tale of one army general leading the people to fight for what he believes in, only to be taken down by greedy politicians.  It will be interesting to see how Fiennes intends to “modernize” the story.
