Golden Globes roundup: George Clooney and The Descendants win big
In my humble opinion, 2011 was one of the worst years in recent memory for quality films. So I’m having a hard time getting excited for awards season as much as I have in the past because it seems the two movies I thought were best this year (DRIVE and TREE OF LIFE) have gone mostly unnoticed so far. Last night’s Golden Globes were no different with THE DESCENDANTS and THE ARTIST taking home the big Best Picture trophies and George Clooney and Meryl Streep winning the best actor and actress awards. Meryl Streep winning should never be a surprise, but THE IRON LADY was dreadful, so I was a little taken back when her name was called. As for Clooney, he did a great job in THE DESCENDANTS, but he’s had better performances in my opinion.
As far as movies boosting their Oscar chances, I would say THE ARTIST, THE DESCENDANTS and HUGO are now favorites to compete for Best Picture and of course, Clooney, Michelle Williams and Meryl Streep should be locks for Best Actor nominations.
