Hall Pass takes the box office while Drive Angry 3D flops

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

HALL PASS will finish the weekend with under $15 million, but will still manage to take the top spot at the box office.  That will make it the lowest grossing box office winner in almost two years.  True, it’s Oscar weekend, which is traditionally slow, but studios shouldn’t kick back and assume that’s what did it.  The movies coming out just aren’t quality films.  I think we should also finally solidify the fact that the Farrelly Brothers are done and that THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY was a long, long time ago.  The other movie to open this weekend was Nicolas Cage’s DRIVE ANGRY 3D.  No one was expecting much from this and Nicolas Cage gave them pretty much nothing.  It’s hard to believe Cage used to be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

Next week sees the release of RANGO, THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU and TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT.  THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU is a good film that audiences are going to enjoy.  I’m still not sold on the other two.  I like 80’s throwback movies, but there’s a fine line between nostalgic and cheesy.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

UPDATE: Looks like GNOMEO AND JULIET managed to overtake HALL PASS at the top. Sundays are always kind to kids movies.

Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis in Hall Pass

1. Gnomeo and Juliet $14.2m

2. Hall Pass $13.4m

3. Unknown $12.4m

4. Just Go With It $11.1m

5. I Am Number Four $11m

6. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never $9.2m

7. The King’s Speech $7.6m

8. Big Mommas House: Like Father Like Son $7.5m

9. Drive Angry 3D $5.1m

10. The Roommate $2m
