Harry Potter and Tangled battle it out for box office supremacy

The weekend after Thanksgiving is traditionally the calm before the Oscar storm so to speak. Rarely does a big film open up on this weekend and traditionally, whatever wins the Turkey Day weekend ends up winning the next weekend as well. In this case, the battle is still brewing between HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 and TANGLED. It will probably come down to how well these films perform today and that is a good sign for TANGLED since Sunday’s are usually kinder to films that target a very young audience. But given the lackluster box office performance of the non-HP films that opened up last weekend (LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS, FASTER, BURLESQUE), I can’t help but think one or all of them would have done better if they had opened up this weekend instead of last.
We did have several “Oscar-y” films open in limited release that included 127 HOURS, BLACK SWAN, THE KING’S SPEECH and I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS, but none of them had a wide enough release to crack the top 10.
Next week is the anticipated release of the Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie film THE TOURIST. I’m excited to see them in the same film, but I have to admit that the previews don’t really get my blood pumping. I’m hoping there’s too many twists and turns and they don’t want to give anything away, but we’ll see.
UPDATE: Looks like TANGLED officially beat out our favorite wizard.
