Harry Potter beats Tangled for the holiday weekend box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I think the Thanksgiving holiday weekend was a case of too many movies opening up at once.  As far as new movies, we had FASTER, TANGLED, BURLESQUE and LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS.  Some of those are films that have shared audiences (mainly BURLESQUE and LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS) and probably ended up canceling each other out.  But maybe the biggest problem was the “R” rating on FASTER and Drugs, which was probably counter productive on such a family oriented weekend.  But I don’t know if any of that would have mattered anyway since audiences were still pumped to see how things are going to end with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1.  However, we have to give credit to TANGLED, which turned in an impressive run, especially for a non-Pixar Disney film.

Next week sees a slew of Oscar hopefuls opening in limited releases such as BLACK SWAN and I LOVE YOU PHILIP MORRIS, so if you live in New York or Los Angeles, you should definitely catch one of those.  For the rest of us, we don’t have anything opening up but a cheesy looking WARRIORS WAY, so it looks like Harry Potter will make it three in a row.  His first real competition won’t come until December 10th, when he faces Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in THE TOURIST.  The numbers below are for the 5 day holiday weekend.

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows $78m

2. Tangled $47m

3. Megamind $17.3m

4. Burlesque $11.5m

5. Unstoppable $16m

6. Love and Other Drugs $13.6m

7. Faster $11.8m

8. Due Date $10.2m

9. The Next Three Days $7.8m

10. Morning Glory $5.9m
