Harry Potter looks set to take the Thanksgiving weekend box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

It’s still early, of course, but it looks like HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 will easily take the Thanksgiving weekend box office with an estimated $90 million, despite some promising new films opening up.  Disney’s TANGLED is the strongest of the bunch, which makes sense given that only families typically go to the theater on Turkey Day.  The atrocious-looking BURLESQUE that has caused me to have SHOWGIRLS flashbacks isn’t doing horribly in third place and the off-key LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is sputtering into fifth with a measly $15 million.  But the biggest disappointment for me is the bad start for Dwayne Johnson and FASTER.  My guess is that FASTER will pick up an audience tomorrow and over the weekend and should be okay in the end.  Remember folks, we want to encourage The Rock to do action movies, not drive him back to doing cheesy kids films.

We will of course keep you updated as the weekend takes shape, but don’t be surprised to see Harry Potter sitting at the top when everything is said and done.  There’s a reason Warner Brothers tries to open most Harry Potter films around Thanksgiving.
